Classification of Aluminum Alloy Types

Aluminum alloy designations use a four-digit system (1xxx-8xxx), where the first digit indicates the primary alloying element. Common series include the 1xxx series, 2xxx (Aluminum-Copper), 3xxx series, 4xxx series, 5xxx series, 6xxx series, 7xxx series, and the 8xxx series for other alloys.

1xxx Series — Pure Aluminum Series

Composition: Aluminum purity ≥ 99.0%.

Characteristics:

  • Excellent plasticity, low strength, easy to process and form
  • Superior electrical and thermal conductivity
  • Strong corrosion resistance, especially in atmospheric environments
  • Low strength, not heat-treatable

  • Poor corrosion resistance, requires alclad coating or surface protection
  • Generally fair weldability, good machinability

  • Medium to low strength, approximately 20% higher than 1xxx series
