PPGL Profile Sheet Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

PPGL (Pre-Painted Galvalume Steel) Pressure Plate is a commonly used material for a wide range of applications in roofing, walling, doors and windows in construction, home appliances, automotive and other industries. It is made of pre-coated galvalume steel sheet, which has good corrosion resistance, strength and aesthetics.

PPGL Profile Sheet is also become prepainted galvalume profile sheet refers to the aluminum-zinc plated steel sheet after prepainting and molding treatment, flat plate-like PPGL color coated sheet is processed by roll forming machine, cold bending into wavy, trapezoidal and other cross-sectional shapes (e.g., corrugated sheet, The flat PPGL color coated panels are cold-formed into wavy, trapezoidal and other cross-sectional shapes (such as corrugated panels, wall panels and roof panels) by roll-forming machines, which enhances structural strength and drainage performance. The surface coating is treated with a special process to provide better corrosion resistance, weatherability and aesthetic appearance.

Triple protection with strong corrosion resistance, beautiful appearance, easy processing and long service life.

PPGL Profile Sheet is commonly used in the following fields: construction industry, home appliance manufacturing, automotive industry, etc.
Uses: roofing, walls, ceilings, fences, refrigerators, air-conditioning housings, exterior materials for car bodies, transportation facilities, storage facilities, etc.

Prepainted galvalume sheet has excellent anti-corrosion properties, beautiful appearance, good mechanical properties, and can withstand large loads. However, the cost of raw material is higher than ordinary galvanized steel sheet, which can be selected according to project requirements.

The service life of PPGL Profile Sheet is 10-30 years, which is greatly affected by the weight of the coating (AZ150+ is better), the coating system (PVDF> SMP> PE), the corrosiveness of the environment (coastal/industrial zones are more severe), the quality of the installation, and the maintenance.

“Ordinary color steel tile” usually refers to PPGI sheet (galvanized-based color coated sheet). The core difference lies in the substrate coating: PPGL uses Galvalume substrate, which is far superior to galvanized substrate (PPGI) in terms of corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and service life, especially in harsh environments, and PPGL is a higher level choice.

Initial material costs for PPGL are typically 15-25% higher than PPGI. However, it is usually well worth it in the long run:

  • Extended life: Significantly reduces the number of replacements and the total cost of ownership (especially for large roofs).
  • Reduced maintenance: Excellent corrosion resistance (especially cut protection) reduces rust repair costs and downtime.
  • Reliable performance in harsh environments: In environments where PPGI is prone to corrosion, such as coastal and industrial areas, PPGL’s performance advantages provide value beyond the price differential.
  • Increased Building Value: Long-lasting aesthetics enhance the image and value of your property.
  • Lower Life Cycle Costs (LCC): PPGL is often the more economical choice when purchasing, installing, maintaining and replacing.

Absolutely! PPGL sheet itself conducts heat quickly. Effective thermal insulation must rely on:
Insulation layer: laying sufficient thickness of thermal insulation material (glass wool, rock wool, polyurethane foam board, etc.) under the profiled sheet, which is the core of blocking heat transfer.
Ventilated air layer: A ventilated interlayer below or above the insulation, which utilizes air flow to carry away heat and moisture.
Cool Roof: Choose light-colored (especially white) PVDF/SMP coating to reflect most of the solar radiation, significantly reduce the surface temperature of the roof (can be reduced by 20-40°C), reduce the downward transfer of heat, and enhance the effect of the insulation and energy efficiency.

Key Points:
Cutting Tools: Electric shears (e.g. double wheel shears) or toothless saws with metal cutting saw blades are recommended. Ensure the cut is flat and minimize burrs.
Prohibited Tools: Strictly avoid the use of wheel cutters/angle grinders! The high temperatures generated can instantly burn the coating near the cut and destroy the aluminum zinc plating, making the area extremely susceptible to rust.
Notch protection: All exposed notch edges and drilled holes must be coated with a special Zinc-Rich Paint (≥ 94% zinc content) immediately after installation. This is a crucial step to ensure the extra-long life of the PPGL and must not be omitted! Sealant can also be used to seal lap joints.

Depending on the project budget, weatherability/aesthetic longevity requirements, and the environment:
Polyester (PE): Best value for money, colorful, flexible, medium weatherability (5-10 year color retention). Suitable for general plants and warehouses with limited budgets, not extreme color durability requirements, and mild environments. Most common.
Silicon Modified Polyester (SMP): Weatherability, light and color retention Significantly better than PE (10-15 years color retention), moderate cost. It is the mainstream choice for pursuing better durability and cost-effectiveness, and is suitable for most industrial and commercial buildings (e.g. medium and high-end factories, logistics parks). Complies with AAMA 2603.
Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF): Top weatherability, color retention (20-30 years), chalking resistance, self-cleaning. Ideal for high-end landmarks, waterfront buildings, high UV areas (plateaus), projects requiring long warranties (15 years +). Highest cost. Compliance with AAMA 2604 is a guarantee of quality. White PVDF is preferred for cold roofing.

High Durability Polyester (HDP) is a modified and upgraded version of polyester resins. Its weatherability is significantly better than standard PE, approaching or even reaching entry-level SMP levels in some metrics (8-12 year life expectancy), while maintaining near PE cost and good processability. It is a cost-effective upgrade between PE and SMP, especially for projects where the budget is a little too large for SMP/PVDF.

Very important! The back side is also exposed to the environment (condensation, humid air, contaminants). Standard backside coatings (PE or epoxy, 5-12μm) provide basic protection. Upgrading the backside protection is highly recommended in the following cases:
corrosive environments (e.g. chemical plants, seaside), indoor areas with heavy condensation (e.g. cold rooms, high humidity workshops, open suspended ceilings), where backside aesthetics are important.

Clean the surface regularly to avoid long-term adhesion of dust and pollutants.
Check whether there is any scratch or damage on the surface of the board and repair it in time.
Prevent excessive chemical corrosive substances in the use environment.

Possible reasons: Inadequate substrate pretreatment, unprotected cut edges, unrepaired mechanical damage, environment beyond tolerance level.

Incorrect overlap, improper fasteners installation, no gap for thermal expansion/contraction.

Recommended for industrial roofing: Galvalume AZ150 + PVDF 25μm + high crest
Recommended for commercial facades: Commercial facades + SMP/PVDF 20μm + flat locking edges (hidden fixing)
Coastal/highly corrosive environments: Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium ZAM + PVDF 30μm + backing paint 20μm
