PPGL Profile Sheet Definition

PPGL: is an abbreviation for Prepainted Galvalume (Steel), meaning “Pre-painted Aluminum Zinc Plated Steel Sheet”.

Profile Sheet: A flat coil that is formed into a sheet with a specific cross-sectional shape (corrugated, trapezoidal, ribbed, etc.) by means of a continuous roll forming process.

PPGL profile sheet: i.e. a color coated metal sheet with a specific cross-sectional shape obtained by roll forming of a pre-painted galvalume steel sheet (PPGL) as a base material. This sheet combines the superior protection of PPGI and Profile Sheet with the decorative/functional, rigid and structural properties of organic coatings.

Core Composition

  • Base Plate (Galvalume Steel): Aluminized zinc alloy steel sheet (typical composition: 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, 1.6% silicon).
  • Chemical Conversion Layer: Typically chromated or chrome-free.
  • Primer: Epoxy or polyester based primer.
  • Topcoat: Polyester/Polyvinylidene fluoride, key layer providing color, gloss, primary weathering and specific functionality.

Substrate & Specification

Substrate specifications

  • Thickness: Common range 0.15mm – 1.0mm (Mainly used for building walls: 0.45mm, 0.50mm, 0.60mm).
  • Width: Standard roll widths are typically 600mm – 1250mm. effective cover widths are less than the raw material width.

Coating weight common grades

  • AZ100 (100g/m²): Lightly corrosive environments or indoors.
  • AZ150 (150g/m²): the most common standard, balancing performance and cost.
  • AZ180 (180g/m²) / AZ200 (200g/m²): Higher protection requirements.

Substrate strength Grades

  • Commercial grades: e.g. DX51D+AZ, CS Type B. Good formability, standard strength (yield strength ≥140 MPa).
  • Structural grades/high strength steels: e.g. DX52D+AZ, DX53D+AZ, HX220PD+AZ, HX300LAD+AZ (yield strength 220-300+ MPa). For large spans, high wind pressure, and load bearing areas.

Coating specifications

  • Front side coating type: PVDF > SMP/HDP > PE.
  • Front side coating thickness: usually 10μm – 40μm.
  • Backside Coating Type and Thickness: Typically PE, 5μm – 20μm.
  • Color and Gloss: Extremely wide range of standard color cards (RAL, Pantone, etc.), customization supported. Gloss can be high gloss (≥70%), semi-matte (30-50%), matte (≤25%).

Specification after molding

  • Profile: Corrugated, trapezoidal, sinusoidal, etc.
  • Wave height (Depth): Common range 15mm – 75mm+, from the height of the wave valley to the height of the wave peak.
  • Pitch: Distance between neighboring crests.
  • Cover Width: Typical range 600mm – 1050mm, the actual width covered by a single sheet of molding when installed.
  • Length: Usually customized (≤12m, subject to transportation constraints) or cut-to-length.

PPGL Profile Sheet Types and Characteristics

The versatility of PPGL profile sheets is largely reflected in their wide range of sheet types. Choosing the right profile is crucial for functionality and aesthetics.

Roof Profile

Standing Seam Sheet:

  • Characteristics: Ribs are high (usually >60mm), and adjacent panels are fastened on-site along the length of the standing seams by a special seaming machine. No roof penetration.
  • Advantage: Super waterproof and windproof, no penetration, modern and beautiful, free expansion and contraction.
  • Application: Suitable for large-span, complex modeling roofs.
  • Representative models: 65mm high vertical ribs, scalloped boards, etc.

High Rib / Trapezoidal Sheet:

  • Characteristics: Wave height is usually 25mm – 75mm, trapezoidal cross-section, wide wave crest.
  • Advantage: High load bearing, fast drainage, high stiffness, economical and practical
  • Application: Suitable for industrial plants and warehouses with large span.
  • Representative models: V-840 (wave height 40mm), YX25-210-840 (wave height 25mm), YX51-380-760 (wave height 51mm) and so on.

Low Rib / Corrugated Sheet:

  • Characteristics: Wave height usually 15mm – 30mm, classic wave or small trapezoidal shape.
  • Advantages: most economical, lightweight and quick to install.
  • Application: For simple warehouses, fences, walls.
  • Representative models: V-125 (wave height 18mm), small corrugated board (wave height 16-20mm), etc.

Wall Panel Type

Concealed Fastening Sheet:

  • Characteristics: Screws are fixed in the hidden part of the board ribs or under the edge of the overlap, so that the nail heads cannot be seen from the outside.
  • Advantages: Clean and nail-free appearance, good waterproofing, beautiful.
  • Application: Commonly used in commercial buildings, high-end factory walls.
  • Representative models: concealed fastening type, plug-in interface type, etc.

Exposed Fastening Sheet:

  • Characteristics: Screws are fixed directly through the crest of the board, nail heads are exposed (usually with waterproof washers).
  • Advantage: Lowest cost and easiest to install.
  • Application: Suitable for walls and internal partitions in industrial buildings with low aesthetic requirements or limited budget.
  • Representative models: YX15-225-900, YX25-210-840, etc.

Antique Tile/Special Effect Panel

  • Characteristics: The three-dimensional texture effect of imitating traditional ceramic tile, wood grain, stone, etc. is pressed by special roller type.
  • Advantage: Strong decorative and unique style.
  • Application: Commonly used in villas, cultural and tourism projects, commercial street exterior walls.
  • Representative types: Spanish tile, Roman tile, wood grain board, stone grain board, etc.

PPGL Profile Sheet Surface Treatment

PPGL profile sheet’s excellent performance is dependent on its fine surface coating treatment. Common PPGL prepainted steel surface treatment includes coating structure, coating material, surface texture and so on. Depending on the application, a variety of coatings are available.

Standard Coating Structure

  • 2/1M: 2 layers (primer + topcoat) on the front side and 1 layer (backcoat) on the back side. Most common.
  • 2/2M : 2 coats on the front and 2 coats on the back (primer + back coat). Provides better backside protection.
  • DUCO : Same paint and thickness on both sides. Used in corrosive environments or when consistent appearance/protection is required on both sides (e.g. open ceiling, partitions).

Functional Coatings

  • HIGH REFLECTIVE/COLD ROOF COATINGS: Light-colored (especially white) PVDF or SMP coatings with high solar reflectance (SR) and high thermal emittance (Em).
  • Self-cleaning coatings: PVDF coatings or topcoats with special additives.
  • Antimicrobial coatings: Coatings with antimicrobial agents such as silver ions.
  • Heat-insulating coatings: Addition of heat-insulating fillers to primers or topcoats.
  • Scratch- and abrasion-resistant coatings: Specially formulated topcoats (e.g. highly cross-linked polyester).

Surface Textures

  • Smooth surface: Standard surface.
  • Suede/Matte finish: Special treatment to reduce gloss.
  • Embossed/Embossed Surfaces: Mimics wood grain, leather, etc.
